The pea is a valuable crop from the legume family (Fabaceae). Its flowers exhibit a structure typical of this family: they are zygomorphic (having a single plane of symmetry), with five fused sepals and a white or pinkish corolla composed of a banner, two wings and a keel. Peas climb by using tendrils derived from leaves and can grow to heights of 1–2 meters (3–6 feet). The roots of pea plants host symbiotic bacteria that fix nitrogen, enriching the soil with plant-available nutrients. Gregor Mendel famously established the foundations of genetics through his studies on peas. ## Keywords angiosperms plants eudicots Fabales Leguminosae peas
