Garden Strawberry (Fragaria × Ananassa)

by STEAM3D

Description

The garden strawberry was developed by crossing two species of strawberry at the end of the 18th century, replacing the previously cultivated woodland strawberry. Strawberry plants have trifoliate, serrated leaves and propagate via runners. Their flowers include an epicalyx and calyx, typically featuring a five-petaled (pentamerous) white or pink corolla, numerous stamens, and multiple carpels on a raised receptacle. As the fruit develops, the receptacle becomes fleshy and red, while the fertilized carpels mature into achenes, forming the aggregate fruit characteristic of strawberries. ## Keywords angiosperms plants eudicots Rosales Rosaceae strawberry
