Description

The tomato originates in South America and was first used as food in Mexico, North America. In the present, around 7,500 cultivars of tomato exist. In its natural habitat it is a perennial, but it can also be grown in temperate zones as annual. The fruit is a fleshy berry rich in carotenoids (especially lycopene). Every part of the plant is mildly toxic, apart from the ripe berry. Tomatoes are often infected by the late blight. It is not clear whether to consider the tomato a fruit or a vegetable.
