Wood Anemone (Anemone Nemorosa)

by Corinth

Description

The wood anemone flowers early in the spring before leaves of other plants may cover it in shade. In summer the upper part withers. Its rhizomes, however, remain under the ground. They participate in vegetative propagation, thus it is not uncommon to see whole “carpets” of anemones in woodlands. Its flowers usually consist of 6 white or pinkish tepals, many stamens and carpels, and are preceded by three bracts. Like many other members of the Ranunculaceae family, the wood anemone is poisonous.
