European Beech (Fagus Sylvatica)

by Corinth

Description

The european beech is a deciduous tree. Its bark is smooth and grey while the leaves have a short petiole and eliptic blade with a sligtly crenate margin. The beech is monoecious. A single tree contains separated male and female inflorescences. Its nuts are enclosed in a spiny cupule. The wood is heavy and hard and it can be used for making furniture or floors. Larvae of the threatened Rosalia longicorn need dying or fallen beeches to evolve. The black woodpecker likes to build its nest in old beeches.
