European Beech (Fagus Sylvatica)

by STEAM3D

Description

The European beech is a deciduous tree with smooth, gray bark and leaves that have short petioles and elliptical blades with slightly crenate margins. As a monoecious species, each tree contains separate male and female inflorescences. The nuts are encased in a spiny cupule. Beech wood is dense and durable, making it suitable for furniture and flooring. The larvae of the threatened Rosalia longicorn beetle rely on dying or fallen beech trees for development. The black woodpecker often nests in mature beech trees. ## Keywords vascular plants eudicots Fagales Fagaceae Beech
