European Pear - Fruit

by Corinth

Description

The European Pear is grown mainly for its fruit, but its precious wood can be also used, e.g. for making recorders. From Asia Minor it spread to Greece (at that time 4 cultivars were known), then it arrived to the Roman empire. The pomes of ancient cultivars were round, but in time trees with typically pear-shaped pomes were cultivated. Pears contain grains of sclerenchyma (called sclereids) in their pulp. The pear is an intermediate host for a pear rust. Its leaves can act as a food for the larvae of the Saturnia pyri moth.
