Hazel (Corylus Avellana)

by STEAM3D

Description

The common hazel is a shrub or small tree, reaching heights of 3–8 meters (10–25 feet), typically found along woodland edges. It is monoecious, producing both male and female flowers on the same plant. The male flowers appear in catkins, while the female inflorescences are small and inconspicuous, with flowers concealed in bracts, revealing only their bright red styles. Flowering occurs from February to April, making hazel one of the earliest plants to provide pollen for bees. Hazelnuts are a food source for various animals, such as spotted nutcrackers and squirrels. Hazel also forms mycorrhizal associations with different truffle species. ## Keywords angiosperms plants eudicots Fagales Betulaceae Hazel
