Description

The common hazel is a shrub or tree 3–8 m (10-25 feet) high and it grows on woodland borders. It is monoecious, the male flowers are borne in catkins. The female inflorescences are small and inconspicuous. Their flowers are hidden in bracts, showing only bright red styles. It flowers from February to April and is one of the first plants to provide food (pollen) to bees. The hazelnuts are eaten for example by the spotted nutcracker or squirrels. Hazel can grow in mycorrhiza with different truffle species.
