Common Mango (Mangifera Indica) - Fruit

by STEAM3D

Description

Mangoes are juicy stone fruits (drupes) produced by various species of tropical trees in the genus *Mangifera*, cultivated for their edible fruit. Although most species in this genus are known as wild mangoes, the genus itself belongs to the cashew family, *Anacardiaceae*. Mangoes are native to South Asia, and the "common mango" or "Indian mango" (*Mangifera indica*) has spread globally, becoming one of the most widely cultivated tropical fruits. Other species, such as the horse mango (*Mangifera foetida*), are cultivated more locally. The mango is the national fruit of India, Pakistan and the Philippines, and the national tree of Bangladesh. The fruit is generally sweet, though the taste and texture vary widely among cultivars; some varieties are soft and pulpy, like an overripe plum, while others are firm, resembling cantaloupe or avocado, and some may be fibrous. While the skin of unripe, pickled, or cooked mangoes is edible, it can cause contact dermatitis on the lips, gums, or tongue in sensitive individuals. ## Keywords angiosperms plants eudicots mango
