Penny Bun (Boletus Edulis)

by Corinth

Description

Boletus edulis (also known as the king bolete) is a popular edible mushroom. Its fruit grows commonly under spruce and pine, living in mycorrhiza with those trees. Its cap is white, turning to brown later, and have around 6–20 cm (2‒8 inches) in diameter. On the bottom side of the cap there are white tubes, which are turning yellow-olive as they get old. The stipe is white and covered with a raised network pattern (reticulations). B. edulis can be mistaken for the inedible bitter bolete (Tylopilus felleus), which tubes are pinkish. B. edulis can be used fresh, but is also suitable for drying or pickling.
