Fly Agaric (Amanita muscaria)

by Corinth

Description

The fly agaric is a fungus living in a mutually beneficial relationship with pine, spruce, fir or beech. It is poisonous, though reports of deaths caused by eating the fungus are rare. It has hallucinogenic properties. Its red cap is covered with white warts, which are remnants of universal veil (a membrane that encloses the young fruiting body). There are white gills under the cap. The stipe is white, with a grooved ring. In old books there are mentions of the caps being sprinkled in milk to kill flies.
