The average speed *vp* is defined as the total distance traveled over a certain time *t*. The average speed does not account for any changes in speed that may have occurred during shorter intervals within that time and can be quite different from the instantaneous speed at any specific moment. For example, cars may have varying instantaneous speeds during a race. At the start, the instantaneous speed is zero because the cars are stationary. As the race begins, their speed gradually increases as they accelerate. The instantaneous speed continues to rise throughout the race until the cars reach the finish line.
