A Gurkha soldier carrying a kukri blade and eating his cold ration straight from a tin can. The British first encountered Gurkhas, from Nepal's hill people, during the Anglo-Nepalese War in 1814. Impressed by their skills and honor, the British began recruiting them in 1815, and they fought alongside the British Army in WWI.
