# Our Explosive Earth
Experience volcanoes up close, with unrestricted access. These fiery openings in the Earth’s crust have the power to build and destroy landscapes. Students can go subterranean, take a bird’s eye view, and pull apart models for a whole new vantage point on volcanoes.
## Key Learning Outcomes:
1. Recognise two main types of volcanoes – shield and composite – and identify the parts of a composite volcano
2. Compare and contrast the characteristics of shield and composite volcanoes
3. Describe the different parts of a composite volcano
## How to Use This Playlist:
This playlist is designed to help your students understand the physical features of volcanoes and the phenomenon of volcanic eruptions.
Here are some suggestions on how to use the resources:
***Volcanoes Explorable Scene*** – Stepping inside this active volcano, students have a cross-sectional view from beneath the bedrock. They should identify it as a composite, or stratovolcano, and observe the steep sides and distinctive layering of ash and lava. Students will be able to experience an eruption and fast-moving pyroclastic flow, resulting from an immense pressure buildup in the magma chamber that causes the molten rock to force its way to the surface.

***3D Model of a Volcano*** – Students can pull apart this model to examine the structure of a volcano in greater detail.

***360 Images*** – These striking images allow students to witness the inferno of an effusive eruption. Fagradalsfjall, an Icelandic shield volcano, erupted in 2021 after 800 years of dormancy. The fluid, free-flowing lava gives rise to the broad, shallow landforms of a shield volcano.

***360 Images*** – Use these images to think critically about the hazards of volcanic activity with your students – for example, ash may be swept by winds to rivers and lakes where it could choke out aquatic life. A balanced view should highlight positive effects, such as the attraction of tourists to the economy and the fertile soil produced by volcanic deposits.

***STEAM3D Model Structure of the Earth*** – Immerse your students and explore this STEAM3D model of the structure of the Earth. By interacting with the different parts of the model, your students will deepen their understanding the role each layer of the Earth plays in the formation of volcanoes.
***STEAM3D Model Stratovolcano (Composite Volcano)*** - Immerse your students and explore this STEAM3D model of stratovolcano. By interacting with the different parts of the volcano, students will develop an understanding of the structure of a stratovolcano, linking its formation to the structure of the Earth.
