Canopic chests like this one would have contained the four canopic jars, each designated to hold a specific organ removed during the mummification process. From the New Kingdom onwards, the stomach was placed in the jar associated with Duamutef, the jackal-headed son; the intestines were stored in the jar of Qebehsenuef, the falcon-headed son; the lungs belonged to Hapi, who had the head of a baboon; and the liver was safeguarded by Imsety, the human-headed son. The chest was often decorated elaborately to protect them so they remained safe and intact for the deceased journey to the afterlife.
