Chanukah, otherwise known as Hanukkah, is a Jewish festival which lasts eight days. The word ‘Hanukkah’ means ’Dedication’ in Hebrew and the festival itself celebrates a miracle that happened in Jerusalem over 2,000 years ago. # Learning objectives 1: Understand the story of Hanukkah {.info} 2: Understand who celebrates Hannukah and how the festival is celebrated today {.info} # What is the story of Hanukkah? {.objective .objective1} Students can read a summarised version of the story of Hanukkah. Students will be introduced to a King named Antiochus and learn how the Jewish community refused to obey his commandments. Students can enter a synagogue and should try and find items that represent parts of the story. # What food is consumed on Hanukkah? {.objective .objective2} Students can explore the synagogue and see a variety of foods that are consumed by the Jewish community during the festival of Hanukkah. Students should be understand the importance of sweet foods. # How is Hanukkah celebrated today? {.objective .objective3} Students can walk around the synagogue and should be able to identify some key Jewish artefacts. These include the menorah and dreidel.
