Description

The French Model M2 gas mask was introduced in WWI to protect soldiers from chemical warfare, primarily chlorine and phosgene gases. Developed in 1916, the M2 was made from rubberized fabric with chemically treated pads to neutralize the gases. It featured two circular eyepieces for improved visibility and protection, replacing earlier masks with single, fragile eyepieces. Despite some flaws, such as fogging, the M2 became widely used by French, American, Italian, and Belgian forces. Over 29 million M2 masks were produced by the end of WWI.
