During World War One, letter writing played an essential role in maintaining communication between soldiers and their loved ones. Letters were often written on government-issued stationery, which was typically simple and utilitarian, including pre-stamped postcards and field service postcards. Pre-written information (such as “I am quite well”) was already printed, so soldiers would just cross out things that weren't applicable to them and sign them off. Stationery was carried in dedicated boxes, which were part of the government-issue kits for many soldiers.
